I am often asked about the different online photo sharing solutions. While there are many platforms, clouds, or applications that allow sharing photos of your family or a particular event, they are all different. This new article offers you 10 solutions for secure photo sharing online, with the advantages and disadvantages for each tested solution.
What criteria for your photo sharing service?
It all depends on the type of photos you will publish. Whether it’s landscape photos or family photos, it is best to carefully observe different points before starting to publish your photo albums or videos online.
There are so many risks and dangers when sharing photos of your children (read this article) or family photos, that in my opinion, it is essential to carefully read the Terms of Service before creating an account and beginning to use the service.
The 15 criteria I use to test solutions
Public sharing or private sharing?
Protection of image rights and privacy?
Does the platform offer high definition?
Can photos be edited online?
Is the service mobile/tablet friendly?
Is it necessary to install an application?
Can guests download?
Can videos be published?
Are contents hosted in the USA?
What is the storage size?
Is it free or paid?
Can you keep control of your photos?
Is the site in French? In English?
Is the service easy for seniors?
Can you share on social networks?
As you can see in this list of criteria, some will be important for your photos, while others will have no importance. So, you need to establish your own criteria to choose the best photo sharing platform, in any case, the one that best suits the use you want to make of it.

Fammies.com
Fammies.com is a platform that allows creating a secure photo and video sharing blog space for families, to share an event temporarily or permanently. Some content is prohibited there (adult, violent, political content, etc.). This platform is therefore suitable to create a family photo gallery and to share private family videos with close ones.
Public sharing or private sharing?
Publications are private only and reserved for guests with an invitation via password. Once created, the space offers a secure and customizable sharing area. You can also create a shared photo album with your contacts.

Protection of image rights and privacy?
Fammies.com (abbreviation of families in English) offers a private solution that protects the image rights of people present in photos or videos. Privacy is preserved because only guests and the administrator can view photos and videos. This platform is perfectly suited to sharing family content or private event content.
Does the platform offer high definition?
The free version allows storing photo albums and videos in web format at average resolution. A premium plan allows storage in high resolution, suitable for professionals like photographers who want to create an online photo gallery password protected for the bride and groom and their guests.
Can photos be edited online?
The platform allows slight modifications to photos once published, such as rotation, display order, and adding captions.

Is the service mobile/tablet friendly?
The photo space is responsive on all types of smartphones, tablets, and accessories.
Is it necessary to install an application?
No application is necessary. Whether to create your space on Fammies.com or for guests. The platform works on all types of smartphones, even older ones. Moreover, an interesting option is that once guests are added, they do not need to create an account to connect to your private space. Besides these advantages, it should be noted that the fact that this platform is not linked to Apple (iOS) or Google (Android) is rather reassuring regarding privacy protection.
Can guests download?
Content downloading depends on your choice and the password configuration used by your guest. You can create several different passwords and choose whether they allow downloading or not. If downloading is not allowed, photos or videos cannot be saved by guests.

Can videos be published?
Yes! Video publishing on a photo sharing platform is quite rare to highlight, especially when its use is so simple. You click « Add a video, » choose the file from your computer, and upload. Once loaded, the platform will encode the video in MP4 format at the correct resolution. For example, a 2GB video, once processed, will be reduced to a few MB, allowing fast viewing for guests on 3G or low-speed connections.
Are contents hosted in the USA?
No! Contents are hosted in Switzerland where the service publisher is located. No photo or video will thus be transferred to the United States.
What is the storage size?
The free version allows unlimited storage of 50 photos, 5 videos, and 5 documents for free. This is more than enough to share an event temporarily. The premium version offers unlimited photo and video storage to share with your guests. This plan also allows guests to become contributors to publish their own photo albums or videos (under your control) in your private space.
Is it free or paid?
The platform offers a limited free plan and an unlimited premium plan. The premium plan costs €9.90 for the administrator. Guests have nothing to pay and do not need to register to connect to the private space once created.
Can you keep control of your photos?
Absolutely. The platform is even made for that! For all those disillusioned with social networks and other users wanting to protect their privacy (such as families), it’s a really suitable service, easy to use for both young and seniors.

Is the site in French? In English?
The platform is in French and English. All features are translated into impeccable English, and the help support is also in both languages. Regarding technical support when you have questions, they answer 7 days a week in French and English as well.
Is the service easy for seniors?
This is one of the platform’s peculiarities: simplicity of use and ease are among the many advantages that make Fammies a perfectly suited service for family photo/video sharing. Far from the complicated American systems like Facebook and other clouds, where you really have to be a computer engineer to avoid privacy pitfalls and hacking risks… The service is truly suitable for sharing with seniors.

Can you share on networks?
Fammies.com prevents photo sharing on social networks. Whether albums, videos, comments, or any other type of content, it is impossible to share anything on social networks. This guarantees true content protection and essential confidentiality when you want to share photos of your children or albums among friends. Also, an important point: your space once created is totally invisible on search engines. You have a private and completely invisible photo sharing space.
My conclusion on Fammies.com
I really appreciated the philosophy of Fammies.com. In addition to its many features, simplicity of use, wide choice of graphic themes, and complete management area, the Swiss service has pushed protection and configuration possibilities quite far to offer, in my opinion, the No.1 platform to share private photo albums and videos online. Feel free to share your comments if you have found a similar service; I would be happy to add it to my list.

Facebook.com
Facebook.com is the No.1 social network in the world, by far. Unless you have been on a desert island for the past 10 years, you cannot be unaware of this American service. Often criticized by many users and being one of the most hacked sites in the world, Facebook has aged a bit in recent years with the appearance of new, younger and more fun social networks or applications (like Snap). Some say it’s the old people’s social network. In any case, you can obviously use it to publish photo albums and videos.

Public sharing or private sharing?
Posts are public by default, but you can restrict access to only your Facebook friends. It is obviously advised not to post anything publicly, especially if it is personal photos/videos, such as family or personal event content.
Protection of image rights and privacy?
This is obviously one of the big drawbacks of the social network. Despite many pages certifying that content and posts are safe, just reading these testimonials and also these press articles about hacks makes it clear Facebook is very risky. Privacy, use of data without consent, very poor confidentiality, and hacking risks are points to consider before publishing photos on the American social network. Photo sharing on the social network can quickly become a nightmare in case of an incident on your account.

Does the platform offer high definition?
Since 2017, Facebook allows uploading photos and videos in high resolution. This option is not activated by default and must be enabled from the app settings before uploading your photos or videos.
Can photos be edited online?
The social network is not an image editing software. However, you can tag people, add captions, change date, location, or move a photo from one album to another.

Is the service mobile/tablet friendly?
The online version (without app) works as well on computer as on mobile or tablet. The app to install requires an up-to-date smartphone. However, be careful about many privacy issues with the app and its Messenger (Read the article).

Is it necessary to install an application?
There is no obligation to install the Facebook app to use it. It is even recommended not to install it on your phone to protect your personal data and privacy. However, if you want to share photos with family members and share videos with friends, your contacts will have to open an account and add you as a friend.
Can guests download?
Friends can download your photos and videos. This cannot be prevented. They can also transfer your photos or videos to their wall (only public content), and tag people on your behalf. This is really not reassuring in terms of privacy protection.

Can videos be published?
Yes! Facebook allows publishing videos on your wall and choosing (as for photos) who can view them.
Are contents hosted in the USA?
Yes! The entire social network and its published content are hosted in the USA and subject to very complex data filtering. Also, read this article on facial recognition by the Facebook group and its subsidiaries. It seems you can enable or disable this option. After many lies and tricks from the group, can we really trust them at this level?
What is the storage size?
It’s unlimited!
Is it free or paid?
Facebook is obviously free and has no paid options. However, as the saying goes: « If it’s free, you are the product! »…
Can you keep control of your photos?
If the American multinational tries, with lots of messages, ads, and advice on its support pages, to make you believe it protects your privacy, that is obviously not true. Having a private account, accessible only to friends, will protect you somewhat more than a public account, of course, but even the slightest hacking will put your personal data (and photos and videos) in the public domain. Regarding this, digital identity theft is very common on the network. Facebook’s privacy settings offer a wide range of configuration options.

Is the site in French? In English?
Facebook is available in 97 languages! It is certainly one of the most translated sites in the world.
Is the service easy for seniors?
If you have used the social network a little and unfortunately checked the settings, you will quickly realize you need to be a genius to understand everything. It’s a real mess in which seniors are completely lost. Facebook is really not suited for grandparents and simple family use. Also, seniors are easy prey for fraudsters and identity thieves. In our previous article, we highlighted the risks of photo sharing on Facebook and the many traps into which seniors can easily fall…

Can you share on networks?
You cannot share photos on another social network. Competition rules!
My conclusion on Facebook.com
You understood, like everyone, I have used Facebook sparingly to follow some contacts and news feeds, but I absolutely do not recommend the social network as a reliable photo sharing service. Unfortunately, it’s quite a dark picture I have painted with this test and the initial criteria I set for each tested photo sharing service.
On Facebook, regardless of the type of photos or videos you want to publish online, data theft and photo misuse can sometimes be costly. The only potentially interesting use is commercial photo sharing, to promote a service. Consider Facebook as a commercial platform with its flaws and drawbacks. What is certain is that the many dangers concerning privacy and hacking are not just legends.

Instagram.com
Instagram.com is part of Facebook’s subsidiaries since 2012 and allows sharing photos and videos publicly or privately. Like Facebook, you have to be friends to share within a restricted circle. More suited for sharing with fans, following music groups or personalities (like Twitter), « Insta » is not very suitable for storing and sharing family photo albums or videos with loved ones. Advertising is also very present and, like all Facebook group subsidiaries, personal data use is unavoidable. If you are looking for a photo sharing social network respecting data, you may have to look elsewhere.
Public sharing or private sharing?
You can publish publicly or privately (with and for your friends).

Protection of image rights and privacy?
Belonging to the Facebook group, published contents are subject to the same constraints as Facebook and its subsidiaries.

Does the platform offer high definition?
When you share a photo with width between 320 and 1080 pixels, Instagram keeps the photo in its original resolution as long as the height/width ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5 (height between 566 and 1350 pixels with a width of 1080 pixels). If the height/width ratio of your photo is not supported, your photo will be cropped to fit a correct format. Photos are thus automatically resized by the platform.
Can photos be edited online?
It is not possible to edit photos or videos online.
Is the service mobile/tablet friendly?
Instagram is perfectly usable on any smartphone or tablet, as long as your device uses the latest OS update. The app will not work on mobile phones or tablets a few years old and where an OS update is impossible.
Your friends can download your photos or videos. They can download a photo from Instagram especially by using a special app. On the post to save, they just have to press the three vertical dots at the top right of the post. In the menu that appears, they must press « Copy link. » There is no way to prevent this.
Can videos be published?
Yes! The app allows publishing videos without any problem. The maximum video size is 4 GB and 1080 pixels wide.

Are contents hosted in the USA?
All the content is hosted in the USA and therefore subject to the same terms of use as Facebook and its subsidiaries. Note also that for questions about the app’s use, the company refers you directly to help pages and, like Facebook, human support is nonexistent.

What is the storage size?
It’s unlimited: you can store an unlimited number of photos and videos in your Instagram space.
Is it free or paid?
The app is free and there are no paid options allowing access to advanced features.
Can you keep control of your photos?
Like Facebook and its subsidiaries, privacy control is very limited. By publishing photos and videos on Instagram, it’s very likely that your content will quickly fall into the public domain if shared with friends who can download and forward it elsewhere without your consent.

Is the site in French? In English?
Instagram is available in 36 languages, including French and English.
Is the service easy for seniors?
Easier to access for seniors who will still need to install the app on their phone to be able to add you as a « friend » to access your private account.
Can you share on networks?
It is possible to share directly on another social network, always by tapping the 3 small dots at the top left of a photo, then « share » on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr. Also, after downloading a photo or video from your space, they will be able to publish them elsewhere.

My conclusion on Instagram.com
Same scenario as Facebook and its subsidiaries, this photo sharing app is attractive for many cases but certainly not for creating, storing, and sharing photo albums or videos with loved ones. Privacy protection is also unreliable. This app mainly allows sharing photos or videos with its community, adding filters. Over time, many other features appeared (like stories, IGTV, etc.) but with the same goal: sharing content with your community. Poorly suited for family photo sharing or for easily sharing and organizing photo albums with friends.

Whatsapp.com
WhatsApp.com is an instant messaging app you can install on your smartphone or tablet. It allows exchanging text messages, videos, and images with other app users, like SMS and MMS. Most users use it to send photos to friends. Being part of the Facebook universe, users are subject to the same constraints as other subsidiaries.
Public sharing or private sharing?
The messaging software is only linked to contacts in your phonebook. While one might consider photo sharing private, it is not. Indeed, once photos and videos are shared with contacts (or in a WhatsApp group), contacts can forward your content to others by pressing the share icon.
Protection of image rights and privacy?
To have minimal image rights protection, you must trust your recipient. Protecting photos and videos on WhatsApp is thus impossible to guarantee. Using it as a photo sharing service is not the best idea if you care about long-term privacy. Also, it’s important to check your phone is locked with a passcode. You’ll need to make settings in the app.

In « save incoming media, » select « never » and « clear chat. » This setting only deletes photos from your phone, not your recipient’s; they must do the same on their side. Similarly, if you share a photo by mistake, you can « delete for everyone » only for a few minutes. After that time, you can only « delete for me. » Then, you must ask your recipient to do the same so that your photo is permanently deleted from Instagram’s cloud. Caution is required when sharing photos with this app.
Does the platform offer high definition?
The optimal format is 1:1 (square). The bigger the size, the clearer the image. By optimizing the image, you will know how it will look in groups, contact lists, chat message, and full size. The maximum size allowed for attachments (photos, videos, or voice messages) sent or received via WhatsApp is 16 MB on all devices.
Can photos be edited online?
Several modifications are available on your photos as well as photos received from contacts. By tapping the edit icon, you have several options like adding captions, rotation, delay, adding stickers or emojis, adding text, or highlighting.
Is the service mobile/tablet friendly?
WhatsApp is not only adapted to mobile phones and tablets but also offers a web version that allows using the software on your computer. You will then have to sync your mobile with your computer by scanning a QR code on your computer screen.

Is it necessary to install an application?
When creating a WhatsApp account, it is mandatory to install the app on your smartphone. Once done, you can easily use WhatsApp online via the Web version, either for photo sharing or for online chats.
Can guests download?
Your contacts can fully retrieve photos or videos you share when sending a message. There is no way to prevent this. While photo sharing is quick with specific contacts, loss of control is just as immediate.
Can videos be published?
Absolutely! The maximum size allowed for attachments (photos, videos, or voice messages) is 16 MB. On most smartphones, this corresponds to between 90 seconds and 3 minutes of video. The maximum video duration varies depending on your phone’s camera. To send a longer video, you can save a lower-resolution video outside WhatsApp and use the file sharing feature to send it to your contacts.
Are contents hosted in the USA?
Everything is hosted and thus transferred to the USA and subject to the same constraints as Facebook and its subsidiaries. When using WhatsApp photo sharing, you enter the terms of use and privacy settings of the group and its companies. Video calls are not recorded.

What is the storage size?
It’s unlimited! You can share a very large number of photos and videos in the WhatsApp cloud.
Is it free or paid?
Before Facebook bought WhatsApp in 2014, the messaging service earned money by charging some users, especially businesses (WhatsApp Business). After acquisition, the web giant decided to make WhatsApp completely free for all users.
Can you keep control of your photos?
It is difficult to keep control over content shared via the Facebook messaging app. Once photos are published in their cloud, you are not safe from security flaws, as has happened several times since the app’s launch.
Is the site in French? In English?
WhatsApp is translated into more than 40 languages on iPhone and 60 on Android. WhatsApp uses the same language as your phone. Note there’s little text and navigation is icon-based, like Skype.

Is the service easy for seniors?
If the app is rather easy to use for calling for many seniors, photo and video sharing is not necessarily easy as icons are small and not necessarily adapted for the visually impaired. However, compared to Facebook or other social networks, WhatsApp is clearly much simpler.
Can you share on networks?
Photo and video sharing is easy with other contacts. To share a photo received on a social network, the recipient can save the photo on their mobile phone and then share it wherever they want. There is no way to prevent sharing on social networks or other online services.

My conclusion on Whatsapp.com
Being a cross-border worker, I use it to talk with my Swiss friends but also all my foreign contacts. However, as I am quite cautious about my photos, I share nothing of my family on WhatsApp, nor on other Facebook group services. You probably understood if you took the time to read my other reviews above. WhatsApp’s great interest is not photo or video sharing (except for humorous photos, for example), but free calls with contacts living abroad.

iCloud.com
iCloud.com is an integral part (if you need it) of every Apple device. If you have an iPhone or an Apple accessory like an iPad or iMac, you have the possibility of creating your Apple cloud. Your photos, videos, documents, notes, or phone numbers of your contacts, once saved in the Cloud, are available everywhere, all the time. Practical but terribly risky in case of hacking as frequently happens with American clouds. Here are my thoughts and opinion about the American giant’s cloud service.
Public sharing or private sharing?
You can share your files publicly or privately with your contacts. Just select the folder you want to share and add the person(s) with whom you want to share. Be careful who you share with because once content is shared, you lose control of your data. Not very practical when you want a reliable photo sharing service.

Protection of image rights and privacy?
Again, (like other American giants), here’s where it hurts… iCloud having been repeatedly a victim of massive hacks and all kinds of vulnerabilities, stored data then ends up out in the wild.
Does the platform offer high definition?
The file storage service allows saving large files. However, free storage is limited to 5 GB. You can increase this by choosing the paid plan with a 0.99 € subscription for 50 GB of disk space.
Can photos be edited online?
You can modify your profile photo linked to your iCloud account but the online storage service is not intended for editing files online. You will have to modify them from your computer, smartphone, or tablet before syncing with your iCloud account.
Is the service mobile/tablet friendly?
iCloud is perfectly suited for use on mobile or tablet and rather easy to use for an informed user. However, some bugs during synchronization and slowdowns may occur depending on the computer or device used.
Is it necessary to install an application?
iCloud Drive is already installed on all Apple devices. You just need to activate it and start configuring your account. The app can also be installed on an Android mobile phone. However, some features may not work. We can thus say that this service is mainly intended for users of the Apple brand.
Can guests download?
Contacts can download your shared photos or videos. Once you share content with your contacts, they can download it onto their mobile phone or computer.
Can videos be published?
Like all other file types (Doc, XLS, PDF, etc.), you can store your videos online. Be careful to check your storage availability so as not to exceed the 5 GB offered.
Are contents hosted in the USA?
Like most American online photo sharing services, everything is hosted in the USA.
What is the storage size?
The free version is limited to 5 GB and it will cost you 0.99 € per month to increase it to 50 GB. That’s just under 12 € per year for online storage. Before subscribing, I recommend testing the free plan to see if it works well with your computer. Sometimes synchronization or connection problems occur. You will have to troubleshoot by yourself to understand why such a message appears.

Is it free or paid?
Both! While the 5 GB free space is often enough, for many users, it is not. Especially when you want to store and back up a large number of videos, music, or photo albums.
Can you keep control of your photos?
Free to form your own opinion. iCloud is an online storage service but is not necessarily very practical for sharing with loved ones. Hacks that have forced many users to delete everything from the cloud can be reason enough to choose another solution.
It is clear that simple hacking of a phone or computer gives access to all files, photos, videos, sensitive files. Are you sure you want to put everything online? As for me, I opted for USB keys and external hard drives, safely stored in my office cabinet.

Is the site in French? In English?
Like all American giant services, iCloud is multilingual! It adapts to your phone’s language version.
Is the service easy for seniors?
Just searching a bit on Google shows that this online file storage service is far from simple to use for seniors. Complicated settings, poor usability, tutorials and forums, many users struggle to use Apple’s service.

Can you share on networks?
Not directly from iCloud, but only when the user has downloaded a shared album or file. They can then transfer the content to any social network of their choice.
My conclusion on iCloud
More than a photo sharing service, it is above all for storing documents, photo albums, or other files online. However, as you might have understood, despite millions of users trusting Apple, I recommend the good old USB key or external hard drive to store your files. This will save you from being, one day or another, a victim of hackers…

Google Photos
Google Photos offers internet users a cloud for storing photos but also high-definition videos, as well as documents and other common digital files. The service was free and unlimited until June 1, 2021, but this is no longer the case. Indeed, the American giant now limits free storage to 15 GB.
You will then have to subscribe to one of the paid plans to increase your Google cloud storage capacity. The cloud offered by the Mountain View company is rather simple to use when storing files. Installing the app may be necessary to enjoy the service’s features (editing, filters, etc.).
Public sharing or private sharing?
For private sharing, for example with family or friends, Google Photos may not be ideal. Private photo and video sharing seems too weak for users who really want to keep control. Private sharing is not really that private…
Indeed, anyone with the link allowing access to your photos or files could share it with anyone else, without access control. Basically, if you share a gallery or file link with the wrong person, they can access the photos even if you didn’t intend it. It is thus really advisable to share only with trusted people, asking them not to disclose (e.g., on social networks) the access link.
Protection of image rights and privacy?
If you read the start of our article, you already know the answer. As part of the GAFAM, it is hard to expect effective protection. Once you upload photos or files to Google Photos and share access with contacts, you must hope they don’t share it further. No password or option properly secures access sharing. Beware sensitive files and personal photos/videos.
Does the platform offer high definition?
The American giant offers 2 possible resolutions for your photos: « high quality » resolution compresses shots to 16 megapixels, and « original quality » keeps the original definition of your shots. Recently, Google notified users that photos uploaded in « high quality » may appear heavily pixelated, unlike photos uploaded in « original quality. »

Can photos be edited online?
The platform provides online editing tools: cropping, rotation, adding filters, modifying date and time of capture… It is also possible to edit videos with options such as brightness, contrast, cropping and resizing, adding filters, etc. As of writing, these file edits are only possible from the app.
Is the service mobile/tablet friendly?
Google Photos works very well on all devices (computer, tablet, smartphone) provided your device is updated. Otherwise, you must use the online version (without app) or update (if still possible) your device to benefit from the app.
Is it necessary to install an application?
To use Google Photos without installing the app, you just need a Google account and be logged in to use the cloud service.

Can guests download?
Your guests just need a Google account to access the shared photo album, photos, videos, or files you share. In short, anyone with a Google account and the address can download your files. Once the file is open, just drag it to the desktop to retrieve it locally. No option is offered to prevent this.
Can videos be published?
Like for photos or other files, you can upload videos. Depending on the type of video (prefer MP4 for quality and upload size), files may be viewable online or not. For example, for a DIVX file, a codec might be necessary.
Are contents hosted in the USA?
Everything uploaded to Google Photos cloud is hosted in the United States.
What is the storage size?
The free version is limited to 15 GB and will cost you 1.99 € per month to increase to 100 GB. That’s just under 24 € per year. Before subscribing, I recommend testing the free plan to see if it works well on your computer, and also check that you can install the app. It is very important to read the terms of service and the privacy rules imposed by the American giant. You can see all here
Is it free or paid?
Google Photos offers free and paid cloud service depending on how many GB you need. The free 15 GB plan is often enough to share photos, for example. However, an important point is the protection of files.

Can you keep control of your photos?
As I explained in the introduction, it is difficult to be sure your files will be safe, accessible only to your loved ones. Once files can be shared without password, without personal invitation, and files are easily downloadable, file protection cannot be adequately assured.

Is the site in French? In English?
Google Photos is available in more than 50 languages, including French and English of course.
Is the service easy for seniors?
Google’s cloud service seems fairly easy to use for seniors. However, creating a Google account and updating their phone or computer can be a barrier to use.
Can you share on networks?
Once files uploaded to the cloud are easily downloadable, any contact you shared with can republish your photos on social networks.

My conclusion on Google Photos
Photo, video, or file sharing on Google cloud offers more or less the same features as other clouds on the market, with the difference of greater storage space (compared to iCloud or Amazon, for example). While the sharing service is fairly simple to use, it remains quite unreliable in terms of data protection. Private file privacy and sharing are basic and insufficient to keep full control of files.
Since your guests can download and republish files on other networks without your permission, file protection will not be guaranteed. However, for sharing non-sensitive photo albums like family photos or confidential files, it can be suitable. Sharing travel photos, landscapes, or non-personal files can be done very easily.
